Aconites prefer a light, woodland type soil. The site should be well-drained, cool and in partial shade. They first appear here and there in the sunniest spots, sometimes at the turn of the year, but soon become a carpet of pure golden yellow, just as the first snowdrops begin to bloom.

Plant bulbs approx. 4cm deep in small clumps of 4 - 12.

One of the most striking native primula species, this is best grown in groups, especially if naturalised in grass. The fresh green rosettes of crinkly oval leaves are covered in velvety hairs, rolled inwards as the flower buds form in spring. Several flower stems are produced, each crowned by a one-sided cluster of long, funnel-shaped blooms, rich yellow and sweetly fragrant.

Crocus are ideal for naturalising and look wonderful in large drifts.
Alternatively they can be grown in a pot or pan, topped with grit, so that the delicate blooms can be admired at close quarters.
Plant bulbs 8-10cm (3-4in) deep in poor, gritty, well-drained soil.
A sunny spot is important as sunshine will make the blooms open fully.
Grows to approximately 10-15cm.

Most grape hyacinths are so reliable and undemanding that they are taken for granted. They need no special care and, once planted, will flower and spread freely, so that division may be necessary every few years. M. armeniacum is a vigorous species with attractive bright blue flower spikes in spring.

The Wild Daffodil (also known as the Lent Lily) is a variable perennial plant growing from a bulbous root and has long grey-green leaves.

Wild garlic grows abundantly throughout the UK, preferring semi-shade under trees. It will succeed in most soils and prefers moist conditions, though it will also succeed where the soil is very wet in the winter. When given suitable conditions, it will form a dense carpet of growth. The plant comes into growth in the middle to late winter, flowers in the spring and then dies down completely by the middle of summer.
