This is the true autumn crocus, and perhaps the finest of all autumn-flowering bulbs. They come from the Middle East, and enjoy hot sunny conditions with a good baking for the dormant corms in summer. The plants are quite neat for autumn bulbs, and may be grown in rock gardens or at the edge of shrub and flower borders where they catch all the available sunshine. This is the easiest species to grow and multiply, a light careful forking in summer often dispersing their seeds and tiny cormlets to create bold drifts of flowers. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
